The Application was led and supervised by Ken Glassby President of IBC who was at that time resident in Italy. He spent 3 to 4 days per month with British Gas throughout the application period. Initially IBC was applied in the South East division to prove its effectiveness and later extended to all 13 divisions of British Gas in the United Kingdom.

Forthcoming Benefits
The application of IBC provided very substantial benefits both in Operating Costs and Administrative Costs of maintaining the System. In all case the emphasis was first placed in improving the Quality and Service to Customers, the financial benefits are somewhat inevitable when work is simplified and methods are improved. An important by product is the provision of better Staff Training which the IBC Micro Analyses provide in the form of a comprehensive Task description.

Development of IBC Management Effectiveness Software
British Gas made significant contributions to the development of IBC Management Effectiveness Software by providing research facilities. When completed the Software was used to evaluate the Effectiveness of Managers at all levels. The results were somewhat surprising revealing a very low percentage of effectiveness. This low level has never been exceeded in other organizations and further research has proved that this is inevitable given present day methods of Training provided to Managers. This is a long story and is deal with in other articles and presentations.

International Benchmarking with IBC
Too often Benchmarking fails due to the fact that we are not comparing like with like. For example in two Insurance companies the work of completing the corresponding Application form was compared. In one company 50 questions were included in the other 150 questions. The apparent comparison was bogus and in fact contradicted the real situation! The company which asked its clients to do 3 times as much work was by far the more efficient, due to the improved service and subsequently lower cost of processing.

The Benchmarking application made between British Gas and Society Nationale Alitalia Metano was a model of International Co-operation. Comparisons of Methods and Costs were made in Clerical Administrative work and Engineering and Manual work areas. In both Companies IBC Analyses were available which enabled truly valid comparisons to be made.

British Gas are the world leaders in Pipeline construction and Maintenance. SNAM formed associations with BG to exploit the best World practices. Both parties gained considerable benefits from the Benchmarking.
Society Nationale Alitalia Metano have constructed Natural Gas pipelines to Italy from Holland, North Africa and Russia. They supply Natural Gas to every part of Italy but unlike British Gas do not undertake Gas distribution within metropolitan areas.
